I have always had an eye for seeing and pulling out color shades. I begin my work by seeing something and photographing it or just putting my own ideas together. After doing my underpainting to add depth, I use my non writing hand to sketch a rough draft of my picture. Then I methodically paint one section of canvas at a time pulling or extracting any colors i see and slowly bring my art to life. I'm a very patient person and I want to "nail down" each image I set my brushes to. When I'm painting I'm in my Zen. Nothing or no one can enter my quiet painting zone. It's wonderful to have that concentration and gift of time. That is my process.
I have a number of artists on both sides of my family. I also came from an alcoholic family. I'm am a 60 year old artist who 5 years ago was diagnosed with ataxic cerebral palsy, contracted while I was in mothers womb - fetal alcohol syndrome. That explains a lot of my growing up years. I was first a high end jewelry designer.,although too hard on my hands. My passion is combining colors. In Augustof 2016 I decided to try out acrylic painting. All of my work is self taught- no formal education. But my favorite secret to share with you is I can't use my writing hand to paint as it tremors badly so I taught myself how to paint with my non writing hand. Turning my disability to "Enabled Art". It brings me incredible joy to paint. I have my own art studio. I'm adding pieces slowly, but hang in there more are going to be added ASAP. Thanks for letting me share my story and how I'm so inspired to have this art as a gift in my life. Please check out my artwork. Kathy Ferrara - Enabled Art
