Sea Dragon is from my Camouflage Fish Series. As an artist, one of my interests is the consideration of figure-ground relationships. This is particularly relevant when using plants and animals as subject matter. Inhabitants of the natural work must live and adapt within their surroundings. This figure-ground relationship is vital, so to speak. With this in mind, I began the series “Camouflage Fish”. Camouflage is a way of fitting into the environment, for protection or stealth. The colors or patterns of the animal that create camouflage are also the features of the subject’s habitat, creating a figure-ground relationship of significance and visual confusion at the same time.

Sea Dragon has been exhibited at ArtSlope, Park Slope, Brooklyn, NY, 2016, Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Art Center, Dowell, MD, 2013, Mamaroneck Artist Guild, Larchmont, NY, 2013,Cornell Street Studios, Kingston, NY, 2012, Yonkers Riverfront Library, Yonkers, NY, 2011, Blue Door Gallery, Yonkers, NY, and Unison Gallery at Water Street Market, 2010.

I grew up in rural Ohio. While earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in drawing and painting at The Ohio State University, I was awarded a Ford Foundation Grant. I then moved to NYC to attend New York University, spent a semester abroad in Venice, Italy and earned a Master’s degree in studio art. The New York metropolitan area has been my home ever since. I now live and work in Yonkers with my husband John, who provides invaluable support, advice, and carpentry skills.
