I have always had an interest in gardening and plant life. Plants in the environment naturally cannot be taken out of context and must survive in their immediate surroundings, so, as a subject for painting, this figure-ground relationship is vital, so to speak. The amaranth was very inviting to consider, as the splashes of bright color that change with the light can fascinate the eye on their own. My challenge is to observe the subject and its surroundings equally, noticing how they interact visually into a sort of abstract jigsaw puzzle. The edges and confines of each of the compositional elements are not always clearly defined, and so I allow the paint to homogenize the elements into one surface/entity.
Cockscomb Amaranth was chosen for the Peace Project 2010, Gallery 9, Culver City, CA, which traveled to Max Lang Gallery, New York, NY, Meridian Gallery, San Francisco, CA, and the Levantine Cultural Center, Los Angeles, CA. It has also been exhibited at The Burr Homestead, Fairfield, CT, JLEFC 's 22nd Annual Art Show, Northern Westchester Hospital, Mt. Kisco, NY, Boeringer Ingleheim Corporation, Danbury, CT, Yonkers Riverfront Library Atrium, and Blue Door Art Gallery, Yonkers, NY.
I grew up in rural Ohio. While earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in drawing and painting at The Ohio State University, I was awarded a Ford Foundation Grant. I then moved to NYC to attend New York University, spent a semester abroad in Venice, Italy and earned a Master’s degree in studio art. The New York metropolitan area has been my home ever since. I now live and work in Yonkers with my husband John, who provides invaluable support, advice, and carpentry skills.
