"Anomura Galathea" is from a series of zooplankton paintings. As a subject for art-making, the consideration of plants and animals in their environments has become both lyrical and metaphorical for me, as the figure-ground relationship in nature is vital, so to speak. But whether in their natural habitat or the laboratory, the translucent to transparent nature of zooplankton as a visual investigation is fascinating, as transparency confuses the figure and ground. Based upon photographs made by scientists using microscope cameras, the backgrounds of the photographs are natural or artificial, varying by the scientists’ choices for display. In practice, I paint transparent color layers which combine to simulate the ground. This is made evident by the build-up of different color paint drips and splotches on the canvas sides. I then use both painting and glazing techniques to create layers of translucence and opacity typical of the zooplankton. The work is finally varnished, creating a painting of both contemporary and classic techniques and another melding of the figure and ground. "Anomura Galathea" has been selected for a number of exhibitions including ArtSlope, Park Slope, Brooklyn, NY, 2016, Greenpoint Gallery, Brooklyn, NY, "SMALL WORKS SHOW!", 2014, Nave Gallery Annex, Somerville, NY, "Peer-Reviewed Submissions", curated byElizabeth Nicula and Ted Ollier, 2013, Las Leguna Gallery, Leguna Beach, CA, "small works - BIG TALENT", 2013, BJ Spoke Gallery, Huntington, NY, "Expo 32", Stan Brodsky, juror, 2013, Blue Door Gallery, Yonkers, NY, "5th BDAA Members Juried Exhibition", Bartholomew Brandt, juror, 2013, RIdegfield Guild of Artists, Ridgefield, CT, "RGOA 35th Annual Juried Exhibition 2012", Steve De Frank, juror, 82 Mercer, NY, NY, "Parallax Art Fair New York 2012", curated by Dr. Chris Barlow.

I grew up in rural Ohio. While earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in drawing and painting at The Ohio State University, I was awarded a Ford Foundation Grant. I then moved to NYC to attend New York University, spent a semester abroad in Venice, Italy and earned a Master’s degree in studio art. The New York metropolitan area has been my home ever since. I now live and work in Yonkers with my husband John, who provides invaluable support, advice, and carpentry skills.
