Each of my paintings starts with an abstract under-painting. This practice gives me an opportunity to play with color and texture before I even begin to contemplate the subject or composition. This under-painting will not only influence the colors in the final composition, some of the under-painting will actually remain visible and become part of the finished piece. In my abstract Floral pieces, I focus a lot of my attention on the relationship between the colors of the flowers and the colors of sky. All of the layers of colors and the texture of the piece creates a sense of energy or motion, almost as though a quiet breeze is blowing through the garden.

“Midnight Garden" is one of my favorite floral paintings. The abundance of primary colors in the piece create a playful child-like feeling. The midnight blue sky creates a sense of a secret place that you are visiting in the middle of the night.”

This painting is on a gallery wrapped canvas 1 1/2" deep and is ready to hang. I hand-stretch and prime each of my canvases on sturdy, square, custom-made stretcher bars.

One Winter back in Minnesota we did not see the sun for more then 40 days. Nothing but grey and cold from dawn to dusk day after day! If you’re like me, just the thought of that dreary climate might make you want to crawl under the covers and hibernate until spring. Life goes on however, and hibernation not being a viable option, I began to use my art to compensate for the lack of natural light and color out my window. I found that the vibrant color combinations could evoke emotions similar to those that I felt on summer walk through the woods. I’m not in Minnesota any longer. I’m in North Carolina enjoying short mild winters and wonderfully long summers, but those long cold winters will never be forgotten. I know that colors impact our emotions. The vibrant color combinations I use in my work are meant to be uplifting and inspirational. I paint with a palette knife to create textural, energetic, and impressionistic paintings that speak to my own spontaneous yet restless nature.
