The Convicted is a series of portraits based off of mugshots collected from various sources on the web. Each painting blends elements of realism with techniques influenced by vintage commercial art such as military propaganda posters or children's storybooks, to create a unique contemporary pop art aesthetic.
China Palace's subtitle is a quick reference to several jokes written into the latest season of Arrested Development, where a character is named China Garden, and as such, is mistaken for a restaurant of the same name. While she herself isn't in prison, her aunt, who goes by the name Olive Garden, is one of three prisoners affiliated with a gang called Jade Dragon Triad.
