The Stateshifter collection is a series of paintings rendered in a more frenetic pattern, in an attempt to capture or express the radical or drastic nature of a shifting mood.

This particular piece is subtitled, "Cluster B;" a subtitle that I've used in other series of works (primarily when I've painted a self portrait). The name refers to the category of personality disorders that Borderline happens to fall under.

My initial goal in the painting was to render my portrait in exaggerated attire that was modeled to resemble a large majestic cloak that would amplify the size of my otherwise small frame. I then applied thick layers of paint which I systematically worked off, to create a background of illegible text.

Overall, I wanted to capture the feeling of transitioning rapidly between a high, histrionic state with a low and neurotic frame of mind.
