It was the Pee-Chee Folders! (Copyright Mead Corp.) Introduced to these illustrated folders in high school, the original drawings by Francis Golden fed my growing mania to draw people. I didn’t even know it was called illustration, or what ‘life drawing’ meant. In the 1970’s the high schools in California pushed us to pick a major to better direct us either to college or a trade. I majored in art and before I could take painting and drawing I had to take an art survey class. Soon I was transfixed, painting with India ink and charcoal, learning watercolor techniques, even darkroom photography. These pursuits were in addition to copying Charles Schultz’ “Peanuts” characters on every surface I could find. My single mother and grandparents were very supportive of my pursuits and though they could not afford to send me to art school, they fed me with books and posters by Norman Rockwell and Maxwell Parrish among many others. As a senior in high school I landed a job as an apprentice ink and cell painter at a leading animation studio (massive lay-offs occurred after the studios began shipping the work oversees, and it was not until Pixar and Disney re-animated animation that many of us could seek out jobs again.) In the ensuing years, I picked up enough work as a pen and ink illustrator to pad my salaried ‘day jobs,’ but I knew something was missing in my life. That something missing was not as it turned out, stand-up comedy and comedy writing… my attempts at both proved so fruitful, I found myself with a baby and living in Fort Worth Texas! I started taking painting classes on weekends, and was soon painting in oils (they are only slightly less mystifying today as they were in the old Paint-by-Number puppy paintings from back in my early childhood…) and enjoying free-lance and portrait commissions. So far, I have painted over two dozen commissioned portraits and have had my work in many art shows and competitions.
