Linocut is a process involving hand-carving plates of color to create original hand-made prints. *Note: Because of the nature of the linocut method, each print will vary ever so slightly, and may not reflect the exact print pictured. This is part of the appeal of linocut, as each print is truly a unique piece.
'Jaded' is from a series of contemporary prints representing luxury lifestyle and high fashion. The print is a portrait of a beautiful woman with striking lips in a style very indicative of the 1920's. This piece explores an era when luxuries were commonplace and art was considered a necessity. Inspired by early 20th-century Lost Generation literature, the title speaks to society’s choice between a life of luxury and artifice or the happiness of a simple existence. Typography woven into the piece was inspired by the styles of the Art Deco era, where the lettering is as much a part of the art as the language itself. The dark outline features a subtle sparkle and creates a graphic look.
Josh Epstein is a printmaking artist who creates vibrant pieces using the 'linocut' method. This technique involves hand-carving a design into multiples layers of linoleum; each linoleum slab is hand-printed on paper with the force of an etching press, making each individual print a unique work on art. Josh's current body of work, titled “Happiness or High Art”, explores a society where luxuries are commonplace and art is considered a necessity. Inspired by the lavish lifestyles and height of fashion in the the Art Deco and Mod eras, the series title and its component pieces speak to society’s choice between a life of luxury and artifice or the happiness of a simple existence. The series examines the intersection of art, culture, and class as they relate to design and fashion over the last century. Josh was recently exhibited as a "Typographic Allstar" at the 6th annual Typeforce show in Chicago. He resides in Chicago with his partner Eddie and two adoring houseplants.
