The idea behind this series of abstract expressionism is purely color. I begin with a variety of colors that are similar in shade as a base and begin building layers from there. My technique involves laying paint on the canvas itself or applying it to my palette and smearing it onto the canvas. Doing this gives me control in a sense that I am telling the paint where to go directionally, however due to the layers of paint being added some areas are omitted, revealing the layer beneath. Once finished I gloss varnish which really pulls the colors off the canvas. Each piece can take me anywhere from 2 weeks to 6 months.
My name is Jon Ramirez. Born in the mid-west, sailed west towards mountains, landed in Denver, and have been following my dream of being a full-time artist. I mainly work in acrylic/mixed media pieces and enjoy working large (48" x 24" stretched cotton is my preference). I am currently working on an abstract series that focuses how one color can vary tremendously and bringing a hexagon style to it. I earned a BA in Art & Design from Purdue University in 2011 which focused on a variety of artistic styles including digital. Thanks for checking out my work!
