Have you ever been out to eat and the one you’re with just won’t eat? Same with the toucan. Likes fruit, just not bananas. And for a monkey, well that’s crazy. And ambiance is important: the rustling of banana leaves in the breeze, the play of light and shadow and the sway of the branch. And if it feels like food preferences are the least of your differences, you might just be two different species.

I have always been drawn to different cultures and compelling places. Maybe it took root in childhood when, as a military brat, I would have to move every few years to a new place, new home, school, friends, land on my feet, and engage. In college I studied world history, economy, cultures and eventually learned two languages, and have lived and traveled in most parts of the U.S. as well as West Africa, Europe and South America. I went on to study and get two more degrees in theology/spiritual formation and art. In each case, the deeper you go with honesty and humility, the more likely you are to strike a chord that resonates universally. I work as a pastor now, which to me is similar to being an artist or bartender or doing standup. In each case, you have to look and listen closely, observe and engage the sublime, the ridiculous, the beautiful and the heartbreaking, all while not taking yourself too seriously.
