"If to Infinite you want to stride / Just walk in the Finite to every side." - Goethe
Mixed media and oil painting are mediums I use to take leaps- and then build bridges among ideas. Symbol and material drive my work so that architectural and organic elements intermingle into paintings that are both innovative and timeless. Encaustic, resin, sand, fabric and format push me to free myself from expectation and help build deeper relationships with my subjects. My goal is to make bodies of work that are rich with layered meaning and reveal something new with each closer look.
Born in San Francisco California, John Koller moved to Southern California in 2006, where he received his MFA from from California State University, Long Beach. Since graduating, John has both curated and exhibited in multiple group and solo exhibitions in the Los Angeles area. In 2002, Koller was selected as a member of Rotary International’s Group Study Exchange Program to Iceland. The exchange program is a prestigious opportunity for participants to exchange professional ideas and promote better cultural understanding between nations. While touring Iceland over 6 weeks, John met with many local artists and lectured about how his experience has informed his creative practice. The trip continues to be a source of inspiration and a reminder of art's great potential. Influenced his diverse cultural roots, Koller blends visual elements in ways that are unique, personal and striking. Slick-chunky. Hard-soft. Architectural-organic. Through the years, John has experimented with media in ways that question expectations of gender, trend and style. Fabric, resin, sand, encaustic and found object are all part of the artist’s arsenal that is intent on surprising and seducing the viewer in new ways.
