I'm inspired by the environment and particularly where the environment and humans intersect. Human degradation of the environment has dramatically increased in the past 70 years and the time is here for us to take significant steps that ensure all people everywhere are protected from the harmful effects of human releases into the environment, and ensure future generations have clean air, water and food.
My work is designed to convey that humans can live harmoniously within the environment.
My paintings are bright and colorful, and reflect my conviction that we humans must live in a sustainable manner within the environment, and restore the places we’ve damaged. My work conveys optimism, while at the same time underscoring the need to ensure all people have the same opportunity to experience the beauty of this world. I’ve been painting on a semi-professional basis since 2007. In that time, I’ve placed work in more than 40 shows throughout Northern California, and sold hundreds of pieces to collectors. I have won numerous awards including Awards of Merit from the California State Fair. I’ve also had my work included in the prestigious Crocker-Kingsley Show at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento. I’ve received media coverage of my work. The Sacramento News and Review stated: “Bright and fauvist, Jim Marxen’s landscapes bear an influence from the work of Gregory Kondos. But Marxen also textures his ’scapes with post-impressionist pointilistic brushstrokes. His urban scenes, which include Sacramento-area landmarks and snapshots of daily life, have the sharper outlines and harder edges of cities—but his palette of vivid hues doesn’t pale.” Sacramento Style Magazine said this about my work: “His colorful urban landscapes and figures nearly jump off of the canvas with rich vibrant hues.” I was one of a handful of Sacramento artists selected to create murals to enliven the Franklin Boulevard District. I do commission work, and for a sampling of other paintings I’ve done, visit my gallery pages on this web site or visit my Facebook page.
