Olana is the name of the home of Frederic Church that is now a New York State Historic site. I had the opportunity to paint at a 3 day plein-air event last summer. It was painted on location on the second day in late afternoon light that created long shadows.. The house itself and how it sits in the landscape is very dramatic. I found being at Olana very inspiring. The home and it's grounds are a work of art that overlook breathtaking views of the Hudson River and the Catskill Mountains.

Ships with a gold frame.

Light, color and a love of the beauty in nature are the driving forces behind my work. I begin a piece of art by splashing the surface with a mixture of turpentine and color. Then I find my way around the surface with a brush quickly making marks defining space, looking for pure color first and then blocking in shapes. I am interested in brushwork, creating illusion and how we perceive color. When painting from life I experience the joy of being present. I choose to work in oil because of the luscious, qualities of this medium. For the larger paintings in the studio I layer colors and medium to create luminous qualities while working from information gathered in smaller studies.
