As humans, the sky is like birth and death –something that unites us all. It is where we live (albeit at ground level), it is our first, our every, our last breath. It is the most common placement of the existence of ‘heaven’ or whatever afterlife we may believe in. It is the most important part of our world, the most changing, the instigator of most physical changes. And the weather is always in the news coverage! Clouds are much maligned bringers of unpleasant weather but rain is a necessary part of the ecosystem and the clouds that bring them can be a beautiful composition of art.

I live in Salton City, California – the low desert, next to the Salton Sea - though I grew up in Wales. As a child, I enjoyed painting, but as a teenager art gave way to academics. In 2001, I was working on photography but soon had an epiphany: “Now, you have to paint!”. The sky is my primary start point. After I had been painting skies for a number of years, a slide of me as a four-year-old surfaced, I was standing at my little easel and the painting I had completed was a skyscape. Then I realized that all my childhood paintings had been like that! I now create work in my signature refractured watercolor technique - painting the scene in its entirety many times, and then cutting it and collaging back together - and mixed media variations on this where I may paint partially in acrylic, and/or write poetry that is painted into the painting.
