"Tiny Mary No. 1"
Acrylic, calligraphy ink, 2002-14
24" x 30"
Based on a small, French 19th Century ivory statue in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC. The images of Mary and Child are painted over various previous backgrounds in order to give the painting complexity and texture. In the background, there can be found gilt highlights, a replica of a figure from an illumination of Hildegard von Bingen, calligraphy letters, large black sections with sharp outlines, etc. The edges of the piece are completely painted so it can be hung as is, unframed.
This painting is the first in a series of large scale paintings of small Madonna and Child statues.
