This is the second of three paintings depicting a building exterior on Wooster Street in the SOHO district of New York City, where I lived for 11 years after grad school. I was inspired to create it when I took a wrong turn after leaving work and ran across these ever changing public art pieces by various graffiti artists and collectives.
My paintings are built up with many successive layers of paint in the tried and true methods of the Old Masters. I make color and compositional choices based on intuition and feel, applying thick gestural brush strokes and scraping with a palette knife to create a rich blend of textures and broken color. I applied a coat of gloss varnish to the surface of the painting to protect the image and give it a professional finish. The sides of the panel are solid wood with beautifully dovetailed corners and D-rings with hanging wire are affixed to the back for a perfect contemporary look.
I have been making art for as long as I can remember. Ideas, colors and compositions are always swirling around in my head. Creating is like breathing for me and I thrive on sharing the beauty, richness and complexities I see in the world. I have been a professional, internationally exhibiting artist for over 16 years. My work has been featured in exhibitions at the Museo de la Cuidad de Mexico in Mexico City, Mexico, the Cameron Museum of Art, Weatherspoon Art Museum. Forbes, Avery Fisher Hall in Lincoln Center, Winterrundgang der SpinnereiGalerien in Leipzig, Germany, HDLU Ring Gallery in Zagreb, Croatia and Stolen Space in London, England. My work has been sold in auction houses including Sotheby's and Phillips de Pury. For nearly four years he worked behind the scenes as an Artist Assistant for world-renowned artist Jeff Koons. He has taught painting and drawing at Brooklyn College and City University of New York. Follow me on Instagram and Twitter: @adammcgalliard
