Ilya Lerner was born in Moscow, Russia in 1966. After emigration in 1989, the artist lived in Italy, New York City, Boston, Houston, Upstate New York, Philadelphia and now in Newtown, Pennsylvania. His work has been featured in more than thirty group exhibitions and was subject of twelve solo shows, including a major retrospective at the Roberson Museum in Binghamton, New York in 2005. Lerner is currently represented by PII Gallery in Philadelphia. His paintings are included in collections of the El Paso Museum of Art, National Park Service, Fundacion Valparaiso and South Side Bank, Tyler, Texas, among others. Lerner won grants from Vasari Classic Oil Paints, New York Foundation for the Arts, Texas Commission on the Art and Arts Council of Houston. He was artist-in-residence at Fundacion Valparaiso, Mojacar, Spain, Mill Atelier Gallery, Santa Fe, New Mexico, Buffalo River National Park, Arkansas and fellow at the Vermont Studio Center. Lerner received Master of Fine Arts degree from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He currently teaches at Alvernia University. Previously he taught at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Oregon State University, Chautauqua Institution School of Art and Lee College. Lerner concentrates in plein-air landscape and narrative painting. His work, that follows traditions of Impressionist and Realist painting, is characterized by sophisticated drawing, nuanced color and exquisite texture and mastery of medium of oil painting.
