Creating acrylic paintings is for me generally initially a very frustrating process. I start with a wonderful idea, a picture in my mind that I want to transfer onto the board. But in 90% of cases, I only get five or ten minutes into the painting when I realise that the transfer is not going to work. It is like trying to transfer a rock painting into Chinese - it just doesn't work. So I just retreat into my left brain corner and allow the right brain to carry on and make of the existing marks whatever it chooses to. And in the end it does not do too badly, after all.
I learned the ABC by painting letters on the back of my mother's paintings-to-be, which strange alchemy has turned me into an artist and writer (with still a bit of the veterinarian I was thanks to my patriarchal genes). Though I have no formal qualification in art, I did attend an arts orientated secondary school and have always kept my creative juices steadily flowing.
