The way I paint is a bit different. I am not trying to get a highly detailed painting. I am more interested in the way colors and shapes work together. My paint is applied in layers, allowing some drying time between layers. Consequently I paint many paintings at a time.
I start with some collage papers and then react to them to make cohesive paintings. At other times, I start with textures and then find a way to paint on them. Sometimes I use other objects to paint with. My approach to painting is to make a visual problem using shapes and colors. Then I figure out a way to solve that problem artistically. I always try to make something unusual about the painting. Sometimes it takes a long time to complete them. This is all done to bring that problem to an artistic conclusion.
My aim is to bring the viewer into the painting to see the many little nuances and beauty of the painting.
This group of paintings is called "Horses of a Different Color".
My name is Mary McShane. My studio in Crestview, Florida is at my house, so I work on my art at any time of day. I am an artist of many subjects and media, and now am an acrylic artist and paint horses in a particular way. I will describe it later. I started painting horses when I was a child about 7 years old. I did this until I went away to college. There I became fascinated with other media and subjects. As a professional artist, I started painting in watercolor using a loosely painted, abstract style. After a while, I painted koi fish and now am painting horses again. Using paint to express the essence of my art is creative and rewarding. Smearing paint on a particular surface is exciting! Matching colors with other colors and getting a feeling or an emotion is wonderful! My aim is to make fascinating and beautiful color interactions. Doing outdoor art fairs was a valuable experience. Nothing can compare with meeting and interacting with customers, which is challenging, but usually rewarding. My aim is to get the viewer into my paintings to try to see what I see. I was an art teacher with a masters degree. I have won many awards on my paintings in the past. Now my aim is to make the viewer come into my paintings to try to see what I see.
