Ready to Hang
This painting is based off an orchid textile and the chevron pattern. It's on a plywood and birch panel, sanded and waxed on the sides to protect the finish, and ready to hang with no framing.
The grid, repetition, the interplay of decoration and order, are all things I explore in my painting practice. Attracted to bright colors and visual excess, in part as a reaction to the moralistic judgement against those things, I take my inspiration from the repeating patterns of surface design, things that offer no overt function aside from decoration.
Heather started her career in graphic design, moving to art full-time in 2001. She began with a focus on collage, which followed naturally from web design – bringing together existing elements in a pleasing and distinctive way. At a time when our culture is seeing a resurgence of traditional crafts –crocheting, embroidery and other handwork – Heather is integrating these crafts into her rich and varied canvases. She has been making art in her studio at Secession Art & Design since it began in 2007.
