History, traveling and my own experiences are the portals of my creative exploration. Architecture also plays a role in inspiring my art. During a trip to Australia I was inspired by the iconic Sydney Opera House. I use the motif of the opera house as both structural and abstract form in my painting. It also can resemble wings or a shell. I also combine images from my travel journals. In this case I use colorful abstraction, the Australian sky, seascapes, dreamscapes, and self-portraits.
I was born in the small town of Brenham, Texas. I drew animals, both real (my menagerie of pets), and fantastic (dragons and such). With this obsession with drawing nature, I studied drawing, painting, printmaking, and art history at Baylor University. I lived for five months in Florence, Italy. There I took classes in cooking, Italian, and Renaissance art. Upon my return the States, I attended an intensive drawing “marathon” at the New York Studio School. I then moved to Baltimore (I was a Texas girl eager to see the East Coast) attended MICA as a Post-Baccalaureate student. After that, I moved to Houston, TX, to earn my Master of Fine Arts from the University of Houston. I worked in DYI art spaces, such as The Skydive, and helped organize community shows. I currently work, teach, and make art in Denver.
