"Holding Blue Hair I" a self-portrait. My motivation to examine this unique part of myself came from simple haircut. I created this after I cut my long hair and donated it to Locks of Love. However, before I mailed the locks, I photographed my hands entangled in the now severed hair. This drawing is based on those photographs. My hair is always changing, yet it its always a part of my identity. I like to dye my hair bright colors, from hot pink to cool blue.
I was born in the small town of Brenham, Texas. I drew animals, both real (my menagerie of pets), and fantastic (dragons and such). With this obsession with drawing nature, I studied drawing, painting, printmaking, and art history at Baylor University. I lived for five months in Florence, Italy. There I took classes in cooking, Italian, and Renaissance art. Upon my return the States, I attended an intensive drawing “marathon” at the New York Studio School. I then moved to Baltimore (I was a Texas girl eager to see the East Coast) attended MICA as a Post-Baccalaureate student. After that, I moved to Houston, TX, to earn my Master of Fine Arts from the University of Houston. I worked in DYI art spaces, such as The Skydive, and helped organize community shows. I currently work, teach, and make art in Denver.
