Farming and artistic aesthetics don't always go hand in hand in everyone's mind, but on the farm beauty is always surprising me. The light of the morning sun on freshly harvested fields, the exquisite shimmer of feathers, or the explosive color of the summer garden.

I try to catch both my emotional response and the natural form in my canvas. Line and color are broken down like a deconstruction to draw attention and direct the eye. I try to Isolate color like a cathedral window and use reflective mediums to allow the the composition to change as the light changes. Even if only a small part of the true beauty of my simple farm based subjects are able to be captured that is hopefully good enough for my efforts to be a worthwhile way to spend my life.

Living my life on my family farm ties me down to my small scale agricultural roots, we were the only farm in our rural missouri community that embraced diversity in what we grew. We always rejected large-scale monolithic agri-business. We were organic before we knew what that was, and sustainable before that was considered a luxury. I have worked in art and graphics for over 20 years and also lived and worked on my family farm for nearly all of my life. I consider sustainable food production from your own working of the land a better way to organize our civilization. We live a very modern life on our farm and host educational events in our 130 year old barn on homesteading and sustainable food production. Even my art education spanning several schools in this country and Europe failed to make me pompously urbane or too sophisticated for celebrating the humble farming life.
