"Embellished Identity" is another take on a series I called “Carving Identity.” I began by imprinting my body onto tar paper to represent pure identity and then used a knife to carve into the paper. The knife created lines which distorted the image of the body until it was no longer recognizable. It symbolizes how every person alters themselves in an effort to be recognized or accepted. A diptych from my “Carving Identity” series won the award for best drawing from the 2014 University of Texas at El Paso’s Annual Juried Student Art Show.
As a person who has struggled with depression, Brice uses art as a way to cope as a form of catharsis. In an attempt to battle her own desire to create idealistic beauty, she uses varying degrees of abstraction and human form to convey emotion.
