Ready to Hang
Following with my series of pieces mixing oil and acrylic, I wanted to do a Frida Kahlo portrait, since her paintings have always amazed and inspired me.
The painting is based on her "Frida with monkey" but I replaced the monkey with one of my favorite characters growing up: Gleek, the Wonder Twins' monkey from the Superfriends cartoon.
This painting contains the two source of inspiration, the modern painters from last century and my love for animation.
The painting combines oil (Frida and background) and acrylic (Gleek) on stretched canvas, the dimensions are 18''x24'', not framed but wired and ready to hang.
Karlo Henry Velazquez, born in Barcelona Spain and grew up in different cities all over Mexico, currently lives in Redding California USA. He is an electronic engineer by profession, but discovered his passion for painting at age 17 after taking an art history class at the Instituto Tecnologico de Monterrey. Since then, he has taken art classes and workshops at the Instituto Tecnologico de Monterrey, Instituto de Bellas Artes de Queretaro and the University of Texas in Arlington. His style began as collages and snapshots of ideas and evolved into more surreal portraits of hearts as seen in the series "CorazonEs:" ("HeartIs:"). He has created a diverse range of paintings that demonstrated influences from popular Mexican folklore and painters like Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera and other Mexican painters With his latest works, he has moved into an experimental phase with his series "Viva el Pop!" where he pays tribute to the 80's and the Pop movement of American culture.
