While facing a difficult challenge early in childhood, my interest in art begun to take form. I had a speech impediment—this fact was immensely frustrating, because when I attempted to channel my thoughts through spoken language, the words come out jumbled or in some strange voice—yet it was through this challenge that I was introduced to the medium of art as a refuge.
Growing up with a speech impediment was challenging and often socially isolating. I endured laughing and jeering from my peers. However, their roaring voices stopped echoing in my mind when I drew. I drew human faces because I did not want to be alone. These friends respected me. I felt an urgency to build a world for my friends to live in. I would draw elaborate pen and pencil drawings depicting all sorts of people, buildings, automobiles, dragons, planes, and anything else that came to my mind. This refuge gave me a voice, and I felt important. Art is the continual theme that holds my life story together.
