Ready to Hang

This piece is dear to my heart. It's my "daring greatly" artwork. It was while painting this piece I decided I would be vulnerable and put my art out for the world to see, like it or not. As Theodore Roosevelt said, “It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.” So I have put myself in the arena, I'm being brave and daring, win or fail, I will be daring greatly. This painting was inspired by just that!

Mixed Media on 30" x 30" X 1.5" canvas. Sides are painted black. Three coats of varnish for protection. Back is wired and ready for hanging.

My mission as an artist is to inspire others to follow their own dreams. My goal is to create art that touches people's hearts and excites their senses. Creating has always been a motivating force in my life from childhood. My art form has changed over the years, it wasn't until late into adulthood, I settled in on painting and made it my exclusive focus. My painting style is intuitive. I start with a a basic concept, color palette, general composition idea, but as the painting evolves, I am constantly evaluating the painting, letting it speak to me. I then make adjustments in for composition, movement, light and value. I think the hardest part of painting for me is that sometimes I know I must cover a part of the painting that I have fallen in love with to benefit the overall composition of the painting. Some paintings just "fall into place" and others I may struggle with for weeks or months, or sometimes I have to put them aside and come back to them at a later date with fresh eyes. But that's one of the things I love about painting, problem solving. Because when you figure out the solution and make it work, it makes your soul sing. I just love it. My other great passions in life are my husband, son and two cats. My son, who is now 21 and has special needs, is my. greatest pride and joy. He makes me a better person. I was unable to spend time creating for many years due the high demand of caring for him those early years. Those years were difficult, demanding and exhausting, sometimes it still is; but he has taught me valuable life lessons that I otherwise would never have learned. Just a few of those are to not take ANYTHING for granted, appreciate the little things, and to slow down and live in the moment. I think, no I know, that has helped me develop as an artist as well, so for that I am grateful. My moments of bliss are when I'm painting in my studio with him laughing with joy as he is petting our cats. My little heaven.
