Maya Angelou - Still I Rise 24 x 24 on canvas by Deb Breton. Another in the series of 'Strong Women' paintings that I feel compelled to do. Maya Angelou was such an inspiration - a very powerful woman. She gave voice to so many, hard to believe that at one time she did not speak... Though one of my favorites from her is The Caged Bird, the verse from Still I Rise was calling to me. So apropos these days. This is painted in a much looser and organic style than some of my previous 'Famous Portraits', but the message is still the same: you have everything you need inside of you...
Deb Breton is best known for her colorful mixed media abstract and portrait paintings. Deb found her “painting voice” at a late age while caring for her mom under hospice. Though she’s primarily a self-taught painter, her earlier design career found her working with brands like Warner Bros. Studio’s and the Dali Museum. These days, living and painting in Sonoma County, California, she oftentimes combines color with words and lyrics to express empowering themes. When viewing her exuberant and admittedly occasional strange work, you get a sense that every line, brushstroke, droplet, and scrape of paint is made with a deliberate hand, guided by an intentional spirit.
