Ready to Hang
In the right light the industrial cityscape makes a powerful silhouette that evokes strength yet vulnerability. The shapes of the buildings and angles of the power lines create a beautiful composition against a dramatic morning sky. This mixed media piece layers acrylic paint with an original hand printed image on a wood panel that is wired and ready to hang.
If you are like me you love exploring. You know that public transportation can be the best way to get familiar with a new city. You allow yourself to get lost in hopes of finding offbeat neighborhoods with the best falafel in town. You love museums but you know that sometimes the most relevant art is found in an alley behind the museum parking lot. Seeing a place with fresh eyes is such a thrill and it's that excitement that I try to capture in my work. Inspiration can come from an overall view of a bustling city street, a brief moment that reminds us to appreciate the little things in life. Or it can be a distressed building wall revealing decades of neighborhood transitions with chipped plaster and peeling paint. In each case I want to show the essence of a place and reveal its raw character. To reveal that character I embrace flaws, even emphasize them, with techniques like image transfer and screen printing that make sporadic imperfections an integral part of the final piece. It all works best when I create intuitively, so the process of layering materials like acrylic paint and paper emulates things that reveal character – strong color, images and texture – adding details that help tell our unique stories. Currently based in the Palm Springs area, you'll find me cruising the streets on a sporty blue bike. I have been a featured artist in CB2 stores and I primarily show my work through online galleries, as wells as in various venues in California, including SFMOMA Artist Gallery at Fort Mason.
