The process of making my artwork is pretty straight forward. I like using some of the most basic of materials to create my images. My technique is all drawing, but i use a mixture of medias to achieve the look that I am after. For the most part I use color pencil and graphite, but also will use oil pastel, pen and ink, metallic leaf, and gouache. I like a lot of realism, but also like a sense of contemporary to compliment my ideas. If it is too much like a photo it will be compared to a picture and that is not what I am trying to do. I think it lets each piece be more captivating and mysterious as it is viewed as a piece of art rather than comparing it to a photo. Color and composition are amazing to explore and I enjoy so much creating images that transform some of the things we might see all the time into something much more bold and impactful. Centering on light and contrast is a big part of what I try and incorporate into my work as well.

My name is David Mason. I am a Vango artist. Thank you for visiting my portfolio. I am from California and currently am living in San Francisco. My background and education are in photography and applied art and design. I was fortunate to have had the chance to study with Ansel Adams the summer before I started college. This was a great start for the start of exploring my creative possibilities. I have always been drawing and in my late twenties I started trying to take my drawing ability to the next level and to start exhibiting and exploring the salability of my work. I consider myself to be a self taught artist and I have been able to create the technique that i currently use, which I would consider mixed media drawing. In these current times it is more of a challenge than ever to lean on my creative abilities for my income, but i have the determination and desire to give it everything I've got to try and take my career to the next level.
