The painting was inspired by an anguished, young man, whose skill in dealing with wood brought him the nickname "Goldenhands" among his fellow workers, and whose memory is still vivd. The cropping of the head is meant to allude to the troubled inner life of the subject.

Dan Nistor trained as a painter in his home country of Romania, where he graduated with a Masters of Fine Arts from Bucharest National Art Academy. In 1996 he moved to New York City, where he continued his practice. Dan taught in Romania and is currently teaching fashion design and illustration at Parsons The New School for Design, and at the Art Institute. Besides painting and teaching, he enjoys listening to music, reading, debating, and drawing his friends' portraits.
