A lot of my work deals with masculinity and gender roles. I enjoy painting figures as much as I like creating patterns and abstraction.
My name is Corey Thering. I am a Seattle and Los Angeles based artist. I grew up in Wisconsin and felt like I was the only gay in the Village. Harassed and teased for most of my youth I turned to drawing and art and dreamed of a new life with people who were more open minded. I was kicked out of the house when my parents found out that I was a queer and I dropped out of High School because I was so confused and uncertain about my future. After years of wasting time working in fast food and factories in Wisconsin, I met a man who gave me hope and encouraged my dreams and talent. Together we moved to Los Angeles, my eyes were opened to the world and possibilities and I was dreaming again. I started out slow, taking a few drawing classes at Pasadena City College, I realized I had the talent and smarts to move on to bigger goals and transferred to Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles. Now I'm a painter living a dream that I did not think was possible.
