I have always been interested in simplicity and complexity within a painting and the idea of taking simple shapes and infusing them with color and dimension allows the viewer to see something other than just a flat shape.
Squares, triangles and circles are seemingly simple shapes, but when color and dimension are added things are not quite as straightforward as they seem.
I enjoy bold, strong colors and using acrylic spray paint allows me to build up layers, blend in or be perfectly flat.
Born in 1952,in Glasgow,Scotland I attended Glasgow School of Art where I studied drawing and painting.I was especially interested in shape and color and began experimenting with shaped paintings and Chinese calligraphy and was influenced by the Abstract art of Constructivism, together with Abstract Expressionism and American Pop Art. I was interested in shaped canvas, and began making fiber glass reliefs which were painted using industrial car paint. After graduating ,I became the assistant Town Artist in the then New Town of Livingston,a planned community built to ease overcrowding in the nearby city of Glasgow and it was here that I painted murals and incorporated art in many recreational facilities. In 1980,with a fascination of all things American,I changed direction and opened a store in Glasgow “Flip Original American Clothing “ selling new and vintage clothing imported from the USA.The store was the first of its kind in Scotland and soon the business expanded throughout the rest of Scotland,England and Ireland and I began to design a range of own brand Flip clothing. Having sold the clothing business ,I was finally able to move to the United States and have lived for the past 14 years on a barrier island outside Charleston SC,where I have been working on a series of paintings using light weight gator board which are built in relief and are hung off the wall to emphasize the depth and shape,to give an illusion of floating. I am currently working on a new series of collage paintings with the central theme of money,it's effects and perception.
