This is a painting of a horse I had the pleasure of meeting. Zeus was a retired racing horse that spent the remainder of his life in a beautiful gulch in Colorado. Zeus always had the same bird resting on his back. He passed away shortly after I completed this painting.
In this extension of Clint Riddle’s dilated variety of artwork, he explores the features of classic figurines through paint and photography, animals, interweaved forms, and malignancies. He playfully brings attention to the influence of stereotypes in toys and portraiture of animals. Being a Watauga native, Clint grew up in middle-class suburbia and was rarely exposed to big, controversial issues. Or he was just ignorant. He was very sheltered from racism and history. As a married father of four, he feels one of arts many responsibilities is to bring attention to issues that cause existential reevaluation.
