This is from the Japanese film classic, Seven Samurai. It is a warrior's portrait. I've painted a solid, bright color background to make the face stand out.
I've always enjoyed drawing and painting. As a child, I made drawings and paintings of landscapes, cartoons, and images from movies. Also, I drew maps and mazes. After graduating from college (Emory University), I followed my interest in art. I studied graphic design and screenprinting. I'm interested in art history, particularly the Post-Impressionists and the art that followed in the twentieth century. Pop art and poster art influenced me, too. I like seeing how type can be used. In the 1970's, my screen-printed mazes were published in the maze book series by Troubador Press. I created these using hand-cut film stencils. Now, I make mazes digitally. I divide my time between commercial art (making designs for promotional products) and working on my own ideas. Lately, I've done more acrylic painting and drawing with pen or pencil. Also, I'm thinking about ways to use photography with my art. I enjoy using Photoshop and Illustrator. In addition to art history, I'm interested in the history of movies. I get many of my images and ideas there. I also like listening to jazz and think of visual art as another way of improvising themes.
