When I was six years old my father died, and with his passing went a big and positive influence, This was in the time before cell phones ,email, and self driving cars. Life was simpler, at least it seemed that way. We lived in a very rural area, and there was nothing to do so I began to draw. Our house was filled with mid-century modern furniture, shag carpeting, and prints by Matise, and Modigliani, as well as tribal artifacts from my Father’s travels. I would stare at them for hours. At a young age I had no context for them, they were just a part of my daily life. Those things, or at least the souls of those things, influence my work today. I don’t want to recreate those works of art and I am not looking for visual realism. I am looking for a spiritual realism.
