I painted this still life according to the seven-layer technique used by the 17th century Flemish masters. Because all of the layers work together both chemically and aesthetically, the painting should age remarkably well, and—as oil paint becomes more transparent as it ages—the layers should show through more and more as time passes, enhancing the illusion of the rendering. In addition to the masters of northern Europe, this period in my development was also marked by the influence of the painters Caravaggio and El Greco, which manifests in the light of this piece.
My name is Christopher Cascio. I am a painter, illustrator, English professor, writer, and editor based in New York and Pennsylvania. I specialize in portraiture, but work with whatever subject matter and media that captivates me. I do take commissions, and thank you for visiting my portfolio.
