Ready to Hang

This piece was created using recycled house paint, which I recently began using in my studio practice. Almost all of the colors used were mistints, which would likely have otherwise wound up in a landfill. All of the colors but one are water-based latex, whereas the green is oil-based enamel, and the combination of the two different types of paint produced some interesting effects. I often title my paintings after song titles/song lyrics/album titles, and this piece takes its title from the song of the same name by U2.

The painting is protected from dust and UV rays by multiple coats of Golden Polymer Varnish (Gloss). It is signed, dated and titled on the back; it is wired; the sides are painted in a continuation of the metallic silver on the front, in addition to runoff from some of the other colors in places; and it is ready to hang when it arrives. It does not need to be framed.

My name is Chris Hood, and I am a painter living and working in Birmingham, Alabama. While majoring in philosophy in college I took a couple of classes in art history, thus beginning my interest in art. I first considered taking up painting at that time, but life (including law school following college) got in the way. After more than 20 years as a trial lawyer, I recently began pursuing my true passion for art. Painting has allowed me to be creative in a way that I never could in the legal world, where creativity is generally frowned upon. My work is inspired primarily by the Color Field/Post-Painterly Abstractionists of the 50s and 60s, chief among them Morris Louis and Gene Davis. As a result, color is the driving force behind my paintings; and the bolder and brighter those colors are, the better. Thank you for visiting my portfolio.
