If there is one word to describe Chase Medved’s art, it would have to be multidimensional. Working primarily in acrylics, he begins each painting with layer upon vibrant layer of abstract color fields to conjure up concrete forms, figures and ideas. This instinctive approach gives free reign to the spirit, movement and energy that shine through in Chase’s work. The end result often leans towards the surreal, imbued with a powerful sense of calm and healing that quietly radiates from those first layers committed to the canvas.
Coming from a background in cultural anthropology, Chase is largely self-taught when it comes to his lifelong passion for painting. Drawing from a great creative wellspring, he has honed his technique over years of practice and experimentation, driven by a desire to share his perspective with others and convey untold layers of insight and meaning.
Chase Medved is a 28-year-old painter, gardener, fitness enthusiast and astronomy buff originally from southern California and currently residing in Lexington, Kentucky. Chase’s body of work occupies an otherworldly space rife with possibility and wonder, conjuring up vivid dreamscapes that are at once familiar and foreign. Reawakenings charts the creative evolution of a young artist reaching beyond the mundane to convey emotion and intent with an increasingly vibrant immediacy. Earlier this year, Chase participated in Lexington’s 8th Annual Exhibit of the National Arts Program at the Downtown Arts Center, where he was awarded second place for his painting A World of Tenants. The National Arts Program would later spotlight Chase as a featured artist on the front page of its website. This summer, in addition to two successful gallery showings of his own (at First United Methodist Church in downtown Frankfort and Cup of Commonwealth right here in Lexington), Chase was honored to have been selected for inclusion in the Rezny Gallery’s “notBIG(3)” international small arts exhibit. Chase’s original artwork can also be found at Scout Antique & Modern, High on Art & Coffee and other local spots.
