My work seems to be a continuation of what I've done immediately before, but sometimes there is a left turn and my work seems unrelated to previous work. If I'm looking at a blank canvas, I usually need an idea whether it is to do a series or try something different. I like color and space relation in abstract or non-figurative painting. I try not to be influenced too much by other art and steer away from trendy art. So what it comes down to is being influenced by what I like in men own work and working to improve that. There is an incredibly large amount of time required to be a good painter and I am in awe of what I've seen from artists when I attend art openings. My work is a personal visual language and continues to evolve.

My name is C. J. Swanson. I am a Vango artist. Thank you for visiting my portfolio. I started drawing when I was 3 years old. I did my first oil painting when I was 5 years old. It was a Paint-By-Number gift set from my mother. I remember thinking that I could paint without the kit but I think I couldn't express that feeling at that young age. I do remember knowing that I had an imagination and that I knew I would be an artist. This was a natural and instinctive feeling. I had friends as a child who had talent musically and I was wondering how that happened and that they were lucky to have that gift. It wasn't too long after, that I realized that visual art is also a gift and very similar to music. Throughout school I studied art whenever I could, most of my work in grade school was painting portraits I would copy from the Sunday newspaper where they printed pictures of celebrities of that time. My mother gave me an old easel that she found somehow. I thought everyone had drawing talent and I still believe that if people pursue it they can develop those skills. Over the years I've had the opportunity to teach young people painting and enjoyed their enthusiasm for color and brushing the paint onto the canvas. I continued to study drawing and painting as well as other art disciplines, such as interior design, graphic arts, decorative arts and scenic painting. I am married to an artist and we share our life as artists painting and exhibiting the work regionally. We have a son who is a musician.
