This painting was completed (mostly) "en plein air" atop a summit near Mt. Baldy just after Christmas, 2014. I hiked a folding easel and supplies half a mile over frozen ground for this beautiful early sun-sinking vista.
Artist Statement: I like to challenge conventions by fusing all artistic styles. I mostly paint with an Asian-inspired aesthetic that's laced with Impressionism and Expressionism, sometimes drifting into abstraction. I believe that essence or "qi" is the most essential element of a painting and try to infuse my work with vigorous energy and raw emotion. I grasp onto fresh perspectives of scenes, sentiments or intricacies drawn from the world around me. It could be a view out of window, a leaf in my garden, a seemingly magical moment from an outdoor adventure or simply a feeling so charged I can hardly stop myself from capturing it in any crazy complex form it comes out in.
