I created this piece in 2006 during a period where I was inspired by a lot of jazz. I often paint listening to different styles of music - predominantly, jazz, with the most influential artist being, Miles Davis. Miles music creates so many types of moods, and I believe I captured in his portrait, the cool, serene mood in the muted colors in his face, yet contrasted with the loud bright psychedelic colors in the background still paying tribute to some of his later experimental music.

William (Billy) Smith, II is a visual artist living in Nashville(Antioch, TN). He graduated from Middle Tennessee State University in 2002 with a degree in Fine Arts. His focus was on painting, printmaking, and ceramics. He used his talents throughout the Middle Tennessee area participating in various exhibitions, freelance work and graphic design. He married in 2005 and moved to Virginia where he taught elementary school students his craft in a resident artist program. He later became a firefighter but continued his art endeavors and his community involvement with children and art. Smith’s style primarily consists of portraits, using collage and mixed media. Much of his portraits pay homage to his ancestors by referencing family black and white photographs from the past. He also enjoys abstract art, using vibrant, engaging colors and organic shapes. Billy has works displayed in Virginia, Tennessee, Alabama, Canada and all over the U.S. through various shows and/or commissions. He is currently a firefighter with Gallatin Fire Department (outside of Nashville, TN) supporting his wife and two children.
