Pastel drawing inspired from my trip to Giverny, France Monets gardens
Matted

When I was five years old, I drew in an old ledger book. My medium was crayon. Drawing was my means of expression. As I paint, I feel uninhibited, and I experience the conquest of the limitless boundaries of art. Lines, gesture, color, space, movement, texture and mixing mediums explode. My decisions are made spontaneously on the canvas. I paint because it is what I enjoy most and it is the one constant in my life. What interests me, is the way different objects come together, a combination of colors, lines and shapes developing forming abstracted compositions. The original shapes become unimportant as color and texture take over. My paintings are the beginning of a story—a setting that is somewhat recognizable and familiar, but leaves room for the story to be discovered by the viewer. Whether it feels magical and beautiful, or oppressive and ominous, is up to the viewer. The plan is to take the observer to a contemplative place; a place that is part memory and part imagination. My artistic influences have been Richard Diebenkorn, for his vibrant colors and composition, and Egon Sheille who I appreciate for the directness of his work, his expressionist idiom, and how he conveys his most intimate thoughts and private visions. Vincent Van Gogh, Picasso, and Edward Hopper, and Giorgio Morandi are also inspirations. I have a special affinity with the work of the Early American Modernists - in particular, Marsden Hartley and Arthur Dove for the spiritual feelings invoked in their work and their splendid simplicity. I was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and am a graduate of the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. I studied painting privately with Jack Lynwood, Tom Wudl, Harry Carmean, Lorser Feitelson, and Leo Carrillo. My art is found in private collections internationally, and have received numerous awards for my paintings. I remain an active member of Southern California Artists Painting for the Environment (S.C.A.P.E.), and in a Women’s Abstract Painting Group in Santa Barbara. Available for commissioned works for corporate offices and private collections. michelezuzalek.com
