I had so much fun with this! For a long time, I have wanted to do a group of chickens kind of lined up. I've had some reference photos of various hens and roosters I wanted to include. When I actually started it, I left out some and added others until I had a grouping I liked. They needed a background. I had a picture I took of the farm at the Monocacy Battlefield in Frederick, Maryland I had been wanting to include in a painting. It became the background even though there are no chickens at the Monocacy Battlefield! I loved having these guys look back at me with their beady eyes while I worked on this.

This piece was completed with artist's colored pencils on Ampersand Pastelbord, a toothy surface meant for pastels. These have definitely become my go to materials most recently. Colored pencil on this surface allows for greater details than pastels, but at the same time doesn't allow for as much detail as paper. It kind of overcomes my tendency to get too bogged down in the details -- a perfect match!

This piece will come to you beautifully and archivally matted and framed in a black beaded wood frame and dark green mat. The artwork is 20 x 16 and the overall framed size is 26 x 22. It's ready for your wall!

My love of art dates back to childhood. As a child and teen, I never went anywhere without my bag of "drawing stuff" -- pencils, pens, paper and drawing books. I took all the art classes I could in school. However, as often happens, the demands of family and life took over and, unfortunately, many years went by with very little time to devote to my art.. Ultimately, I reached the point several years ago where I could not exist another day without art in my life. With great joy and much encouragement from my family, art again began to play a significant role in my life. At this time, I also chose to work in color, taking the leap from strictly working in black and white. At this time, I am thrilled to be a full-time artist, working mainly in pastel, colored pencil or ink and sometimes combining these for mixed media. My subject matter varies widely -- whatever catches my eye and imagination. As long as I'm creating, I'm happy! I belong to several area art groups and have participated and sold works in various shows. I look forward to reaching another audience through Vango. I thank you for visiting my portfolio and I hope that as you view my work, the joy I feel in creating it is apparent!
