This piece was inspired by the song "So Long, Marianne," by musician/poet Leonard Cohen. This song was written for a woman named Marianne, whom Cohen described as the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Marianne and her child were abandoned by her husband, and Cohen brought them home with him to Montreal. The story he tells is that of pain and happiness, transience and stability. This collage is an homage to Leonard Cohen and to his beautiful, captivating lyrics.
My name is Ariel Kohn, and I am a collage artist based out of Brooklyn, NYC. I think of collage as a form of poetry- using imagery that is familiar and breathing new life into it. Through collage, I try to reshape our perspective on reality, humanism and emotion, and to express visually what often cannot be expressed through written word.
