Mandela. A fearlessly flaming torch for truth, compassion and freedom. He uplifted our spirits and not only unified his nation but many other nations as well. I used 23 karat gold leaf to celebrate Mandela as an "icon" in the same spirit as the classical religious "icons". I respect people who have made an impact on our society. I respect people who have the ability to change our way of thinking and guide us to a more compassionate and understanding behavior.
The painting continues around the edges, so it is ready to hang unframed.
ICONS OF ICONS. Antti Eklund paints iconic portraits of iconic people and things. Said of Antti Eklund: "Francis Bacon coming on Andy Warhol with Keith Haring watching, a touch of Gerhard Richter and a splash of Martial Raysse, a squeeze of Yan Pei-Ming, a drop of Marlene Dumas. But, no - genuine Antti Eklund." Antti Eklund paints with oil on canvas. He also experiments with exclusive finishes like 24 karat gold leaf and oxidized copper. The 24 karat gold leaf reflects power and the spirit of classical religious "icon" paintings while illuminating the superfluous illusion we all have of ourselves. Born in Finland and trained as an Architect the former Professor of Graphic Communication has had an internationally award winning career in design before committing himself fully to art. Antti Eklund lives permanently in Baltimore, MD, USA. See more at eklundartfactory.com
