I was visiting South Carolina and this small white bird came and sat on a boat in the marsh nearby, strutted around until he got my attention and then stood posed as if to say "Okay, this is my good side. Paint me now." So I did.
ARTIST STATEMENT: I want my art to open the viewers eyes but also to bring joy. A self taught artist, born and raised in Africa, my main medium is acrylics impasto style, painting primarily with a palette knife - impressionist, loose and free with bold color. I often incorporate charcoal, watercolor and burlap or handmade paper in to my art for texture and the earthiness of the fabric. The strength and courage of women is my main inspiration and passion. Women display dignity and courage in many harsh situations - not just in war zones, but also in difficult living conditions. I base the paintings on scenes I have witnessed and experienced around the world during my travels. A strong suggestion in my work is of women helping women regardless of race or economic status because so often those with the least do the most for others.
