Molten lava flowing hot and glowing red is an interesting subject to me. It’s just as interesting to me to contemplate the destruction of life and how nature renews the landscape after “cleansing” it with fire. Lava creates new land and terrain over the old one and the cycle repeats.
For this piece I decided to keep the sky light in color to contrast with the black landscape. This also made the red, yellow and brown highlights pop over the textured surface.
I started this image first by laying down texture using flexible modelling paste. This gave me a general idea for the flow of the painting and a clear lined that I could use to separate values. I then colored the upper atmosphere with a light brown and bluish tint. The textured areas I painted various hues of red, yellow and orange to which blended into the background to give the textures somewhat of a glowing effect. I then painted the textures black or various shades thereof and blended that into the background with red and brown colors. Red highlights were placed wherever color was needed which was followed by orange, yellow and white.
I am a self-representing artist in Southern Colorado and have been involved in graphic and digital art for 20 years. For the past few years I have been focusing on fine art and painting (especially abstracts and landscapes). My upcoming works will include purely abstract pieces as well as abstract infused landscapes and cityscapes. When an image comes to my mind I have to create it or it will become an obsession. Painting and creating art is very liberating. It is perhaps one of the most natural forms of expression that I use to share my own unique perspective.
