I enjoy the deep blue of the mid-day ocean contrasted with the blue sky.
For this image I definitely wanted to tell a story. The vessel is simple sail boat dressed in white manned by two, heading out to the open sea. I kept the left side of this painting open to inspire a sense of vastness. The 3 palm trees point the direction to go and spread their leaves as a farewell gesture. Greeting the men as they venture outward are two seagulls out in the distance.
First step to this painting was to coat the background in blue for both the sky and the sea. The fade to white in the center was created through a series of washes allowing the paint to dry after the application of each layer. For the sea I added a touch of green or aqua that you often see in water at a distance. I then added clouds and dark blue color to the foreground water to break up the monotonousness. Black was used to block in the trees after which different shades of green (darker to lighter) were added to the leaves to create depth. A palette knife was used to block in the abstract forms that would become the boat and the reflections in the water.
I am a self-representing artist in Southern Colorado and have been involved in graphic and digital art for 20 years. For the past few years I have been focusing on fine art and painting (especially abstracts and landscapes). My upcoming works will include purely abstract pieces as well as abstract infused landscapes and cityscapes. When an image comes to my mind I have to create it or it will become an obsession. Painting and creating art is very liberating. It is perhaps one of the most natural forms of expression that I use to share my own unique perspective.
